Lockdown unlikely for Baw Baw

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton spoke about Baw Baw Shire Council’s Covid outbreak at Wednesday’s daily press conference, as the region recorded 19 additional COVID-19 cases.
Professor Sutton said Baw Baw Shire, which had a spike in cases several days ago, would not be put into lockdown as cases had largely been linked and were in quarantine.
“They had a big spike a couple of days ago with 31 cases in a day,” Professor Sutton said. “It was known what the superspreading event was there, it was household gatherings. Those households have hen had subsequent cases. But they are largely linked, they are largely being identified in people who have been identified as primary close contacts and can quarantine. So we’ll keep an eye on it but it’s more of a known entity.
From that very high number a couple of days ago, it’s kind of trended down. Again, yesterday a bigger number and but mostly linked and mostly quarantining. Part of our consideration is how community health services are able to respond to that case load and manage with the local public health unit support. At the moment it’s relatively stable. They will push on, as have lots of regional local government areas, to higher and higher vaccination coverage, which kind of stabilises the prospect of a really explosive outbreak.”
In data released today by the Department of Health, Latrobe recorded six new COVID-19 cases, Bass Coast two and South Gippsland one new case.
