Rawson Man Dies In Accident
Rawson Man Dies In CrashA 20 year-old man from Rawson died in a fatal car crash near Tyers on Tuesday. He was the sole occupant of a vehicle that collided with a tree on Tyers-Walhalla Road, 3km north of the Gregson Road intersection.
Division Five road policing advisor Senior Sergeant Jason Hullick described the circumstances leading to the incident. “Just after 5.30pm the 2004 Hyundai Getz was travelling north on the Tyers-Walhalla on a straight stretch of road,” Snr Sgt Hullick said. “For an unknown reason at this stage the driver has lost control of the vehicle and slid off to the left hand side of the road, impacting a large gum tree and causing significant crash damage to the cabin of the vehicle.
Snr Sgt Hullick said the incident was witnessed by a couple of people who were following the vehicle and immediately rushed to the aid of the victim. “They (the witnesses) just saw the car losing control as they were turning the bend and they managed to get the young man out of the car and up to the roadside, and despite the efforts of them and Police Officers doing CPR he unfortunately passed away at the scene,” he said. It is believed the witnesses were locals that were known to the victim.”
He said the investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing. “At the moment we cannot account for a reason as to why the vehicle left the road, it is a straight stretch of road and was in relatively good condition,” he said. “There isn’t a lot of shoulder space on either side of the road and it is lined with heavy vegetation on both sides, so once you exit the carriageway itself you are in a bit of strife with not a lot of grace unfortunately.”
“My main message is you really need to concentrate behind the wheel. With this young man there is no indication of speed or anything at this stage – it was just a young man driving a vehicle and clearly something has occurred,” Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
